Losing one tooth can be a life-changing event. For the tens of millions of adults who have lost all their natural teeth, the idea of having a strong, functional, beautiful smile can seem completely out of reach. Although modern dentures fit more precisely than ever before, they still come with plenty of pitfalls. But thanks to our experienced experts at Pioneer Greens Dentistry, you can attach your dentures to dental implants for more stability and comfort. What Are Implant Dentures?

While traditional dentures sit on top of the gum tissue and rely on suction to remain in place, implant dentures are anchored to the jawbone itself, just like natural teeth. We can strategically position implants in your arch that will promote bone growth and make your dentures much more secure. In fact, your prosthetic teeth can feel just like the real thing! There are basically two types of implant dentures, as described below.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

With fixed implant dentures, it’s pretty common for patients to forget that they have fake teeth at all! That’s because these teeth are affixed permanently to the implants and can only be removed by a dentist. They require the same simple care that natural teeth do, but you’ll need to have a strong jawbone in order to qualify for this treatment.

Removable Implant Dentures

If you would prefer to be able to remove your dentures, we can make the restoration removeable. Instead of permanently attaching the dentures to the implants, we can use a “snap-on” system to hold them in place and give you that flexibility. Keep in mind that with this option you’ll need to remove them every day for proper cleaning.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The process of getting implant dentures starts with a consultation here at Pioneer Greens Dentistry. We will fully examine your mouth and jawbone using our 3D cone beam scanner and determine whether this treatment is a good match for you. Once you are ready to begin, we will surgically insert the implant posts throughout your arch. Before we proceed to the next step, we then will wait for the jawbone to surround the post. Once this process is complete, we will then put the abutments or connector pieces in place. At that point, we will take impressions of your mouth and create custom dentures, which are then bonded to the implants for a completely comfortable fit.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Unlike traditional dentures, which can be fabricated for basically any patient, implant dentures have a few requirements. First, you must have a healthy mouth free from tooth decay or infection. You must also have enough jawbone density to support the implants. If you do not have these two things (i.e., a healthy mouth and jawbone), we can help you achieve them, whether through gum disease therapy, cavity treatment, or a bone graft. When you’ve overcome these obstacles, you can then be eligible for this innovative treatment.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Before you go through all this time and effort, you may be wondering whether attaching your dentures to implants really makes a difference. It absolutely does! Traditional dentures put all the stress and pressure on your gum tissue, making it difficult to bite and chew. In fact, studies show that dentures only allow you to use about 30 percent of your original biting power. On the other hand, implant dentures, like natural teeth, use the strength of the jawbone to restore more than 70 percent of your biting force, which enables you to eat more nutritious foods in your diet. As a result, you can enjoy a healthier lifestyle and have much more confidence in your smile.
